HISTORICAL PROFILE: AUSTRALIAN / BRITISH HYBRID PRISON RIOT GUN
· The Weapon: A 1960s British Webley-Schermuly 1.5-inch (38mm) smoothbore launcher [1, 2] recycled from a heavy-duty WWII flare gun frame. It was designed strictly for law enforcement to fire non-lethal tear gas or rubber baton rounds.
· The Blade: A 100% Australian-made Pattern 1907 sword bayonet. It was forged out of native steel at the famous Lithgow Small Arms Factory in New South Wales.
· The Markings: Stamped 20 (built in 1920) with factory assembly number 6149. It was overhauled for WWII and stamped 2 M.D. (2nd Military District, NSW) [1, 2] and re-serialized 62378. The blade features two seven-pointed Commonwealth proof stars and a factory bend-test X.
· The "Marriage": Post-WWII, New South Wales prison armorers fitted a ventilated metal cooling sleeve over the wide British Webley barrel. This modification allowed them to lock the surplus Australian infantry bayonets onto the front of the gas launchers.
· Tactical Use: Deployed in maximum-security Australian correctional facilities during civil unrest. The launcher fired gas from a distance, while the fixed 17-inch blade served as an intense psychological deterrent and a defensive barrier to keep rioting inmates from rushing guards.
