The A.F.M. 34 (Appareil Filtrant de Marine modèle 1934) is a rare French Second World War respirator developed specifically for the confined spaces of naval vessels. Unlike conventional gas masks, whose bulky filter arrangements proved impractical below deck, the A.F.M. 34 featured an innovative rear-mounted filter canister connected by a hose running over the head. This compact configuration allowed sailors to move through narrow passageways and even remain buoyant if thrown overboard.
The metal face plate is blue-gray embossed metal.
